September 27th to November 19th Two Intensive Spanish Modules (4 Weeks each)
80 Hours each
(5 recommended credits each)
September 27th to December 17th 12 Weeks of electives choosing up to two courses (6-8 Recommended Credits)
Options include:
  • Biology and Tropical Science track (includes 2-4 weekend field trips)1
  • Business Track (includes 4 weekday field trips and a possible internship)
  • Development Track (includes 4 weekday field trips and a possible internship)
  • Courses entirely in Spanish such as Literature, Cinema, Phonetics, or History

September 27th to December 17th The opportunity of an internship at a local Business, NGO, Social Program or another custom opportunity based on your specific interest. This will happen concurrently with the elective courses.
December 18th Re-entry Retreat
Program officially ends on the 6th of April.
Students are free to fly home or pursue other interests beginning on the 19th of December.

Travel components:

Alternative Models of Development: Visit an agricultural cooperative where they have developed their own currency to open up new economic alternatives. Dates to be announced.

Coffee and the Cloud Forest: Rural tourism and the agricultural economy. Looking at the traditional agricultural existence of Cost Rican coffee farmers and environmental, economic and political forces shaping change. Dates will be determined in the first weeks of the program.

Local Field Trips: 4 Local field trips will help students to experience other aspects of Costa Rican history and life that they might not experience on their own.

Staff Accompaniment: Weekly meetings during the first few weeks will provide a forum to reflect and process the context of life in Costa Rica. Staff member will be available at Universidad Veritas.

NOTE: The IGE trips and activities are not optional, but are a required part of the semester academic experience.

Ask about opportunities to get additional Spanish units by participating in courses before or after the regular IGE semester.

  • Family home stay with private room, 2 meals a day & Laundry

  • In-country travel to and from the University
  • Internet time for research of class projects outside of the University


Visits from Parents or friends

If you are considering hosting friends or family during your semester, please notify the IGE staff as soon as possible. Visitors should not distract from the completion of the semester activities. We recommend that visitors come during the Holy Week, or at the conclusion of your semester when you can dedicate your time and energy to them.


Cancellation Policy

Cancellations must be made within 30 days after acceptance – refund is equal to amount paid less any amount spent by IGE that is non-refundable.

Program is non-refundable after the program begins.

One weekend travel exploration to an alternative cooperative that has created its own currency.

Local Field Trips:

One local field trip to experience another aspect of Costa Rican reality.

Three organized lunchtime meetings to discuss issues of cultural adjustment and important local issues.

TOTAL of 8-9 semester credits recommended. 80 hours (5 credits) of Spanish and 3-4 credits of elective coursework.
