Through the centuries, Vienna stands out as a cultural center. Musicians like Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert and Strauss called Vienna their home, as well as groundbreaking artists, Klimt and Wagner. Today, this enchanted city nestled on the banks of the Danube maintains this heritage with a wide variety of cultural venues. People from all over the world come to experience for themselves the world-class exhibitions, concerts, opera and theater.
Vienna is also home to one of Europe’s oldest universities, the University of Vienna (Universitat Wien, founded 1365). Vienna is an inspiring juxtaposition of historic and modern, with reminders of its Imperial past standing right along side its contemporary, cutting-edge infrastructure. Whether you choose to circle the center of the city on the fascinating Ring Boulevard, tour the elegant Schonbrunn Palace or simply enjoy a visit to an authentic Viennese coffee house, there is something that is sure to inspire you.
Due to its central location in Europe, Vienna is an ideal hub from which to explore, with Italy, Switzerland, Germany and Eastern Europe just across the Austrian borders. From Vienna, other amazing cities such as Salzburg, Innsbruck, Munich, Budapest, and Prague and be reached in under 5 hours by train. Vienna is an amazing study abroad option for students looking to travel a large portion of Europe in short distances.
IGE Vienna has afforded me the opportunity to enrich myself academically and culturally in a fun and exciting environment. At IGE, you are more than just a name in the program’s roster. The small group size allows for a more intimate experience that is responsive to your personal interests and objectives. However, probably the best thing about IGE is the emphasis it places on integrating you into the local community. By living in a dorm with Austrian students and studying at the same university, you gain a much deeper appreciation for the Viennese culture and way of life. IGE has been one of the best decisions of my college career, and I highly recommend it to anyone who wants an exciting and enriching experience in one of Europe’s most underrated cities.
